  JA Guelph-Wellington

Charter Overview

Junior Achievement Guelph-Wellington (JAGW) offers a suite of programs to learn about business world practices, on a volunteer basis and with real results.

Programs are facilitated by business professionals, who volunteer their time and are trained in the course materials, to bring current business know-how to the students' learning experience. There is no charge to the schools or students to access these offerings. Instruction materials are purchased with the funds contributed by businesses, service organizations and citizens.

These real-world programs were developed in conjunction with the Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines and compliment the Ministry’s mandate to increase career preparedness for youth

JAGW Programs include:

Business of Our Own
Show students the best way to really learn is to really do! Students in grades 3 to 6 engage in activities to apply their knowledge and skills to a real life situation. Students become the Presidents and CEOs of their very own retail sales business.

Our Community - Needs, Jobs, Tools
Give students the building blocks of a successful career, right here at home. Students in grade 3 to 6 gain a perspective on the importance and impact of business in shaping our lives. Students actively define the cornerstones of a strong society and learn about their role in its growth and prosperity.

ESIS: Economics for Success
A one-day event. This interactive program encourages students in grades 7 and 8 to consider and reflect on the advantages of remaining in school. Covering a broad range of future considerations, students explore supporting oneself, industry opportunities, the realities of lifestyle versus personal resources and career preparation.

Dollars with Sense
High School students are empowered to financially navigate change in their lives with money management skills – starting now!

Student Venture
Business students bring their high school books to life for an entire semester; with real-world exposure to running a business that aligns with the school curriculum. This in-class program facilitates the students’ success in developing, producing, positioning, marketing and selling a real product.

Company Program
From October – May, high school students bring their curiosity of business to this weekly, after-school-program. Over the course of eight months, they live the business experience in a hands-on venture of developing, launching, promoting and closing a company. Mentored by business professionals, youth walk-the-walk of marketing, sales, finance, administration, and production with an actual product, sold in the real marketplace.

Titan Program
High-level leadership experience without the high-risk. JA Titan is an interactive web-based business simulation where high school students compete as companies in a fictitious market. Students make executive decisions to discover the many triumphs and challenges faced by senior management.
Students efforts are recognized at a year-end Futures Unlimited Banquet for outstanding entrepreneurial achievement and have an opportunity to meet members from key business community organizations and listen to a keynote speaker.

JAGW has expanded its program offering to ensure programs are available from Grade 3 - 12 for the 2008-09 school year. It is expected we will double our student reach with programs thoughout Guelph and Wellington County.

Future economic success demands youth entering into their careers, in self-employment and in standard employment paths, to bring a demonstrated sense of business to all they do. It is the new competitive edge for the next-generation work force.

Junior Achievement is well-placed to help the students of Guelph-Wellington face a bright future.
